Orthodontics

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics represents a branch of dentistry which targets first and foremost a functional occlusion (healthy bite), allowing for teeth to remain on the mouth’s arch both under (odontal and periodontal) health conditions.

A healthy occlusion means, of course, dental alignment but perhaps more than that, the health of periodontal tissues. (bone, periodontal ligaments).

Periodontal treatment: allows for dental alignment, having positive effects on local sanitation. Cleaning of tightly aligned teeth (tight teeth) is difficult to manage and the immediate result lies in the carious process, as well as periodontal diseases. Nevertheless, the most important aspect of the orthodontic treatment is the aesthetic one, the latter having major consequences on the integration in society of the patient, teenager and adult.

How do fixed braces work?

The purpose of fixed braces is to straighten teeth, both in the case of children and adults, with effect in adjusting the masticatory, occlusal, phonetic, and none the less aesthetic functions. Clear ceramic braces are very popular among adults because the brackets are the same color as the teeth, therefore, being noticeable only from up close (as can be seen in the image above).

Professional braces allow for the straightening and correct positioning of teeth on the arcade. While stiff teeth can be inherited, it is also possible that they can derive as a direct consequence of the habit of children suckling on their big thumb. Teeth can also change their normal position if a lost tooth was not replaced on time, causing the rest to move in the direction of the missing tooth and therefore, leading to the appearance of gapping between teeth (teeth gapping).

When are braces needed?

Braces are needed in the case of:

  • Teeth cramping;
  • Stiff teeth;
  • Dentomaxillary disorders;
  • Teeth gapping;
  • Problems caused by extra teeth or lack of teeth on the arch;

What are the components of your braces made of?

Orthodontic treatments use braces or other instruments that apply light pressure to stiff teeth until they get into the correct position. In most cases, braces have metal components, only the aesthetic brace components being made of ceramic, while the elastics and metals can be colorful, invisible or the same color as that of teeth.
